NASA Research Announcement (NRA) 80JSC017N0001-BPBA – Topics in Biological, Physiological, and Behavioral Adaptations to Spaceflight: Integrated One Year Mission Project and Other Opportunities

The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) would like to inform the Canadian Health and Biomedical community of the release of a NASA Research Announcement (NRA).

NASA’s Human Research Program (HRP) released Appendix C of the Human Exploration Research Opportunities (HERO) NRA on November 30, 2017. This NASA Research Announcement solicits proposals to study International Space Station (ISS) crew members participating in six-week, six-month and one year missions. The objective of this NRA is to use the ISS to better understand the dynamics of space adaptation and the efficacy of current countermeasures, in order to better predict human health risks linked to deep space missions that last one year or longer.

NASA opened this opportunity to international participants. Interested international applicants should be aware that this call for proposals by NASA is not a funding opportunity, but rather an opportunity to perform research with ISS crew members. Researchers are responsible for obtaining their own funding for these research activities should their proposal be selected by NASA.

The CSA encourages Canadian scientists to submit proposals to this NASA NRA. Selected proposals from Canadian Principal Investigators will be funded by the Canadian Space Agency. In order to be eligible, each Canadian Principal Investigator must send to the CSA a copy of the Step-1 Proposal. The deadline for receipt of this Step-1 Proposal by the CSA is January 4, 2018. The CSA will provide a Letter of Support to Canadian Principal Investigators as required by the NASA NRA process and timeline.

Important dates:
Pre-Proposers Conference: December 11, 2017 – More details about this event can be found here.
Step-1 Proposals Due: January 4, 2018, 5 PM Eastern Time

Step-2 Proposals Due: April 4, 2018, 5 PM Eastern Time
Estimated Step-2 Selection Announcement: August 2018

Note :
Step-1 Proposal Relevancy Review
Step 2 Proposal Scientific and Programmatic Reviews

Appendix C of the HERO NRA and associated documentation can be found on NSPIRES (NASA Solicitation and Proposal Integrated Review and Evaluation System) through this link. Inquiries about the NASA NRA proposal submission and selection process should be addressed to NASA.

More information about the process to obtain CSA funding for selected proposals will be released in early 2018. Inquiries about obtaining Letters of Support and funding should be addressed to the CSA at: asc.santespatiale-spacehealth.csa@canada.ca.

The Canadian Space Agency is currently developing a mailing list to facilitate communication with Canada’s health and space community. The main purpose of this list is to enable the sharing of information related to funding opportunities or any other space activities. In no case will your information be shared with another external organization.
