SUMMARY:LifeSciences BC and JLABS: The Future of Blockchain in Healthcare
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever needed to go to a walk-in clinic or emergency room\, and been frustrated when you need to run through your entire medical history with the doctor because they don’t have access to your files? With blockchain\, this is going to and has already started to change. \nBlockchain technology has the potential to transform healthcare by placing the patient at the center of the healthcare ecosystem. It has the ability to create a secure\, private\, global database that will lead to better patient care and stable\, protected personal medical information. Blockchain has the ability to shift precision medicine from a trial concept to common practice. \nOn Thursday\, February 28\, 2019\, JLABS and LifeSciences BC invited attendees to learn more about blockchain’s role in the healthcare sector\, and how it will (or will not) improve and change the patient experience. Through our presentation and panel discussion\, attendees saw real-world examples of use cases\, applications\, and heard a real discussion on if blockchain will really do everything we think. \nKeynote Speaker: \n\nKate Merton\, Head\, JLABS @ NYC\, Boston & JPOD @ Philadelphia\n\nOther Speakers included: \n\nDavid Houlding\, Principal Healthcare Lead\nMicrosoft\nVictoria Lemieux\, Associate Professor\nUniversity of British Columbia\nAndy Park\, Co-Founder\nCoral Health\n\nThe Future of Blockchain in Healthcare

SUMMARY:McCarthy Spotlight Speaking Series: The Science of Communication
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, November 8\, 2018\, LifeSciences BC held the fall McCarthy Spotlight Speaking Event. \nEvent Topic: The Science of Communication \nSpeakers: \n\nMegan Helmer\, President\, PR Associates\nWilliam Johnson\, Director\, Marketing & Communications\, Innovate BC\nMichelle Sklar\, Director of Conferences\, Cube Business Media\nAlexandra Weirich\, Communications Lead\, AbCellera\n\nTrust in businesses\, government and the media are rapidly declining. Because trust impacts reputation\, it has become even more important now to present information clearly\, making it meaningful and well-understood. Held twice a year\, these events start with presentations on specific topics by local representatives of LifeSciences BC members. Typically\, the event is attended by a cross-section of approximately 40 of our life sciences community members representing mainly industry\, NPOs\, and Government. \n \nIn the past\, the series has featured topics focusing on attracting and keeping good talent\, technology and licensing\, M&A and Capital Markets\, to name a few.

SUMMARY:IP Protection for the Cannabis Industry
DESCRIPTION:Using IP to Protect Medical Applications of Cannabis:  Tips and Strategies for Innovators\nWith the impending legalization of recreational cannabis\, there is tremendous interest in a plant that has long lurked in the shadows of illegality. There is also significant interest in the medicinal qualities of cannabis and some of its key components\, which are useful in managing chronic pain and show promise in the treatment of numerous disorders.  With such unexplored ground comes the potential to develop new innovations\, and a need to protect those innovations in the best way possible. \nThere are a number of ways that intellectual property (IP) can be used to protect cannabis-related innovations. On Thursday\, May 10\, 2018\, LifeSciences BC held its IP Protection for the Cannabis Industry session\, which outlined how IP can be applied to help businesses secure the value of new innovations relating to medical applications of cannabis. Specific examples of medical applications of cannabis or cannabinoids that have been patented or are the subject of pending patent applications were given and compared to contrasting examples of situations where trade secret protection might be considered over patent protection. Different strategies for protecting new strains of cannabis were discussed\, as well as the interplay between plant breeders’ rights and trademark rights when the names of new strains are to be protected. \nThis session was of interest to those concerned with IP strategy for companies investigating new medical applications of cannabis or new cannabis strains\, as well as to investors looking to ensure that their investments in this sector will be protected. This session also offered those who are interested in the cannabis industry generally an opportunity to learn more about some of the unique considerations that apply to using IP to protect cannabis-related innovations. \nSpeakers:\nJennifer Marles: partner and intellectual property lawyer with Oyen Wiggs \nGina Lupino: registered US Patent Attorney \n\nLana Culley: Director of Business Development\, Anandia Labs \n\nEvent sponsor:

SUMMARY:MedTech Showcase Series: LightIntegra Technology
DESCRIPTION:LightIntegra’s first product\, ThromboLUX\, was introduced to the US market in late 2017 and is starting to make a splash – by using ThromboLUX to determine platelet activation status\, hospitals are seeing unprecedented reductions in platelet use for blood cancer treatment. On Wednesday\, March 28\, 2018\, LifeSciences BC held its MedTech Showcase Series: LightIntegra Technology where attendees learned more about how ThromboLUX helps hospitals allocate platelets for more effective use\, and heard about its other applications in transfusion medicine and diagnostics.
