GlycoNet Signs MOU with Japan’s Institute for Glyco-core Research (iGCORE), Strengthening Global Glycomics Collaboration

EDMONTON, AB – GlycoNet, Canada’s national network advancing glycomics research and innovation, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Japan’s Institute for Glyco-core Research (iGCORE) during the Glyco27 conference in Edmonton.
The agreement builds on an already successful five-year collaboration and reflects GlycoNet’s ongoing commitment to fostering international partnerships that accelerate advancements in health, biotechnology, and sustainable agriculture.
The MOU was signed on behalf of J-GlycoNet and the Human Glycome Atlas (HGA), both major initiatives of iGCORE — a joint research institute established by Nagoya University and Gifu University.
“At GlycoNet, we’re focused on turning glycomics research into health solutions, and iGCORE, J-GlycoNet and HGA share that same goal,” said Dr. Elizabeth Nanak, CEO of GlycoNet. “This agreement reflects our shared commitment to advancing science and building strong and sustainable international collaborations.”
The new MOU formalizes and deepens strategic areas of collaboration between GlycoNet and iGCORE, including co-funded research projects; shared use of platforms, technologies, and materials; student exchanges and training opportunities; and joint development and utilization of glycan (carbohydrate) databases.
The three-year collaborative agreement aligns with GlycoNet’s broader mission to advance the growing field of glycomics and to translate fundamental research into solutions that improve lives. Global partnerships are essential to driving impactful research that bridges continents and scientific disciplines to tackle shared global challenges.
About GlycoNet
Led out of the University of Alberta, GlycoNet is a pan-Canadian research network consisting of over 210 researchers in 36 institutions across the country and has funded over 180 projects. GlycoNet investigators use the study of carbohydrates (sugars) in living cells to find solutions to unmet health needs through the development of tools, drugs, vaccines and diagnostics. Taking a One-Health approach that considers the connections among human, animal and environmental health, GlycoNet is advancing research, innovation and training in glycomics to improve quality of life for Canadians. Under the network, GlycoNet Integrated Services (GIS) operates as a national platform of glycomics services. GlycoNet and GIS together provide one-stop access to glycomics tools, specialized expertise, consulting and collaborative opportunities to academia and industry, both nationally and internationally. GlycoNet is also a leader in training the next generation of glyco-scientists and promoting collaboration and advancement in glycomics research. GlycoNet is supported in part through the Government of Canada’s Strategic Science Fund, the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s Major Science Initiatives Fund, Genome Canada’s Technology Development Program and Alberta Innovates.
